The Magic of Quilting

It’s been a while since I have posted and I will be getting something up regarding our last days in California and the mad dash home as well as what is going on in our household regarding our international traveler’s quarantine… but for now… Quilting.

This is my current project and I am TICKLED with the whole process of it. I thought I would share just in case anyone is interested.

This is a single bed quilt I am making for my mom. I have a matching one for my dad (you’ll see my fabric choice for him in the first pic). It goes together so slick and I can’t wait to finish it and post my photos of it. ASIDE: I have no idea when that will happen as the parents have informed me they may not stay in singles any more and may get themselves a new double bed. Sigh… I may have some quilts to pass along to people with single beds.

So here is my process (remember this is just a quilt in the making and not the finished product… I don’t even know what the backing or binding is going to look like!)

This is a Jelly Roll. It is a roll of 40 different but matching fabrics. The roll is made up of strips that are 2 1/2″ by approximately 44″. BTW, This jelly roll is sitting on my mom’s old Singer, foot treadle sewing machine.
I take 5 of those strips and sew them together into a long 44″ strip set
From the strip set I get four 10″ squares. Well, I am supposed to get four but sometimes I mess up and only get three. I will, no doubt have to make an extra strip set up from my scrap pile to make up the losses.
I sew each 10″ strip set square to a plain white 10″ square (the white could be any colour but I like how the white makes everything POP!). I sew right sides together all around the outside – can you see my seam line?

Now… wait for it……..
Okay, so this is where the MAGIC happens! I chop that 10″ square corner to corner and flip those triangles open and… Voila!!
I have these beautiful little squares!! I sew them all together and end up with a quilt. See how the coloured half has the strips running either down or across? I just set them out one across and one down strip then another across strip then another down… and on and on.

I can’t wait to see the final product. It may be this lovely little single bed quilt or it may end up being an expanded project for a double or a queen…

Much like our lives today, only time will tell. Hopefully not too much time.

Hope I didn’t bore you with this little tidbit post but now you can see one of the things that get me excited and why. Well, as I’m sure you have guessed, it is magical to me and I hope you were surprised how these things come together.

Stay safe, stay healthy and stay well, my friends!

  1. It is great to have something that excites you! You know how when someone else is laughing really hard, you may not even know or get why they are but it makes you smile?? Well, your enthusiasm about your quilting has same effect!!

    1. Oh, Kim! That is so sweet! Are you going to start quilting??? LOL, we could have quilting bees and quilting getaways… maybe go on a quilting cruise!
