Owl Hunt – Interrupted

So, my back button focusing is getting better (IMHO). It has taken some work and lots of errors to learn from. This is the Great Grey of Owl Hunting Day 5. As I mentioned these beauties can hear a mouse (or vole) moving around up to 19″ under the snow. And that was very apparent watching this fellow. He kept his eye on us and his ear on the snow in front of him. You could see him listening, then he would brace, then stop and relax again for a bit.

We kept our cameras on him though. I did so want to get some good pictures of an owl in flight! And suddenly…

He took me by surprise when he suddenly got ready to pounce. Look at those legs! they almost look like puppet or rag doll legs to me.
He went up and around then came back toward his prey. It took me a while to settle down and start getting these pictures in focus.
Hovering?
Getting ready for the kill
And down he goes. Now, this photo is followed with too many out of focus images – I got super excited because I couldn’t find him but he’d gone behind a snow bank to catch his prize.
I thought this was another out of focus photo (well, mostly it is) but do you see him down there peaking out of the snow bank. Looking at me, maybe blaming me for his lack of success???
He comes back to his perch now. Note, there is nothing in his claws.
I thought it was cool the way he lands on the fence post.
Now I get “the look” like, “If you would just keep quiet and calm down I could have had my supper!”
And off he went. As did we!

Well, this is the last of my winter owl hunting. I am off to warmer climes for a while. I am looking forward to golfing, training for my Spring Camino and looking for humming birds.

  1. Your back button must be working out quite well cuz you have waaaay more than I do of in-flight photos with some sharpness
