Desert Blooms

We have had a so much rain this winter and coming into spring that we are having a super bloom around Palm Springs area. There’s even been a ton of snow in the mountains!

I missed the last super bloom so will definitely be heading out a few times to capture the beauty of the desert blooms. A couple of weeks ago I did read and article somewhere that said this is not officially a super bloom so I decided to ignore that report and not look again – it IS a super bloom. After you have a look at the pictures I took out in Borrego Springs with Alexis back in early March you tell me!!

This is Desert Sand Verbena (Abronia villosa). It was growing in waves amongst the dunes
and really made the desert come alive
Peace amongst the blooms!
This beauty is called Desert Gold. It’s a member of the desert sunflower family (Geraea canescens)
The Esteve’s Pincushions (Chaenactis steviodes) were so pretty in their pink and white frothy looking party best!
I think this is an Arizona Lupine (Lupinus arizonicus Fabaceae). When I tried to ID it using my Plant ID app I came up with two other kinds of Lupine so I am not positive about this one. No matter, it is growing everywhere, out in Borrego Springs, up on the Shannon Trail, over at the Cahuilla Trail… it’s one of my favorites!
These beauties are called Birdcage Evening Primrose. They were so perfect I couldn’t stop taking photos!
I hope this gives a good idea of how amazing this bloom is and why it feels like such a miracle! This would normally just be sand and some green grey vegetation, probably some brittle bush and a few smoke trees.
I had to have this one!

For all my friends back in Canada, I hope you enjoyed this peek into spring and the possibilities of the coming months! Yes, we all know that winter shall pass eventually… here in the desert it has definitely passed and is putting on the most amazing show.
