“Life is Good” Photo Challenge

I participated in one of the many photo challenges that came up while we have all been in this COVID-19 quarantine, lock-down, and or self-isolation (depending on where you are and what stage of travel of exposure you are in).

This was the Life is Good photo a day challenge and was posted with the following explanation…

I was nominated for the 10-day “life is good” challenge by
Cealaigh Kelly Mitchell . 10 days, 10 photos, 10 nominations. Every day I promise to share an image that’s meaningful to me (without explanation). I’m not nominating anyone, but if you want to play, feel free.

Well, I didn’t nominate anyone because I had already done that for the last challenge I participated in. I only have so many friends and really don’t want to lose them! For the blog I am reposting the photos I chose, this time with an explanation.

I was in Victoria with my buddy Kim during the summer of 2019 and we took a day trip up the beautiful coastline highway, the Marine Coastal Circle Route from Victoria, through Sooke and on up to Port Renfrew with many stops along the way. This was amazing tangle of driftwood (natural? manmade?) was found on Whiffen Spit, right near the Sooke Harbour House, an award winning resort that practices sustainable and green tourism and serves locally sourced foods.
You may have seen this one before, in fact there are quite a few that I chose that you have likely seen before. This is from a trip to the Yukon with Neil Zeller Photo Workshops. If you love photography, you will love his workshops. Check them out, he is a great teacher and has some fabulous outings. This was our first night in Dawson, I think (maybe the second). It was magical and so different from the other nights that we were able to photograph the aurora.
Our good friend and photog group leader Kellybird took us on a photowalk with a surprise in mind – it was a family of Great Horned Owls. The are very well camoflauged and were not easy to locate. You could tell that Kellybird was worried but she found them all for us! I call this little owlette Cutie Pie for obvious reasons. So fluffy and really photogenic, don’t you think?
Another day trip with Miss Kim – we do a lot of that no matter where we are. I’m pretty sure this sign was at Pioneer Town. This is a tourist site truly worth visiting. It is a replica of a 1880’s style town built by movie stars in the late 1940’s. There have been more than 200 old west movies and series filmed here!
Yes, I am a dreamer, bet you didn’t know that!! Ha! BD and I decided one day to to take the little ferry on Vancouver Island from Brentwood Bay to Mill Bay rather than driving the Malahat to visit our daughter, son-in-law and grandson. We had lots of time to spare so walked around Brentwood Bay for about an hour. Such a quaint little village and so many pretty gardens and houses. I snapped this and many more pictures around that harbour.
This is Miss Mischa, the love of my life and now, sadly, gone. She was not the best trained dog, she did not really care for other dogs, she was a bit sneaky and she ate the butter out of the butter dishes off the Xmas table one year but I loved her and I miss her. One day I will get a new dog, just not now.
BD did some fabulous surprises for my 60th birthday, one of which was a trip to Churchill, Manitoba with Brian Keating to see the polar bears. Man, I loved those polar bears and being able to meet the man, the legend in person!
The winter of 2019 in Alberta (at least what I was here for) was a fabulous year for finding Snowy Owls. I went out six or seven times looking for them and some of the other species and for the most part was not disappointed. You can find 11 different species of owls in Alberta. My goal is to get photos of all of our species. In my first year of birding I was able to get four of them, the Snowy, the Great Horned, the Great Grey and the Short-Eared, thanks to a lot of help from friends!
Isn’t this guy adorable? He is the resident watch dog at the Merridale Cidery on Vancouver Island in the Cowichan Valley near Cobble Hill. Daughter, Niece and I loved to go for tastings and lunch there when I would visit them. The orchard has been planted with old world cider apple trees and they make wonderful cider there. I never thought I would appreciate cider but there are at least two on the island and they make amazing tasting cider!
BD and I went sailing for a week on a catamaran in the British Virgin Islands with good friends and had one of the best vacations ever! Before and after just the two of us spent time in Puerto Rico walking up and down the streets, through the tourist attractions and hanging out in street side cafes. The architecture, history, people, colours and food are just sublime. I loved this picture of these old guys deep in conversation enjoying their bench in the shade.

Well, those are my 10 Life is Good photos With Explanations. This was a fun challenge. I probably could have continued digging through old archives of my photos. It was so interesting to look back and has inspired me to get to work on choosing to print, frame and hang some of my photography.
